My Vancouver Girls “Staycation” and Giveaway!

Vancouver Girls Night

These days, bachelorette parties seem to be a pretty big deal.  Many people jet set away to the sun their last getaway as a single girl.  However, due to many different circumstances (time, finances, familial responsibilities) this is not always feasible.  Really, though, it is possible to have an amazing stagette weekend right here in Vancouver.  I recently planned one that was, if I do say so myself, pretty spectacular. Is Vancouver overrated?

Should Vancouver get over itself?

Should Vancouver get over itself?

In his recent Huffington Post piece, 10 Terribly Overrated Destinations (And Where To Travel Instead), David Landsel singles out places that everyone is told to travel to but, in his opinion, are not worth the airfare.  Vancouver was amongst his victims.  Read more…

Absurd Vancouver Property (March 14, 2013)

I feel like $4 million is a good amount of money to spend on a luxury home…That kind of money affords one a certain kind of lifestyle, I would assume (I have to assume because I don’t actually know!).

In Georgetown, Washington, $4 million buys you this mansion, which formerly housed the Field School (a distinguished prep school):

My must see Vancouver open houses (March 2, 2013)

For those looking to buy a home in Vancouver, the season of spending every weekend getting in and out of your car and trudging through open houses has begun.  I secretly loved this process when we were looking for our home, particularly the voyeurism of it – some homes were absolutely pristine and perfectly staged, while others were a den of hoarding, disrepair and grime.

Thank goodness I don’t have to go looking at open houses, but if I did, these are the ones I’d want to check out this weekend.  Not necessarily to buy (I couldn’t afford most of them), but just to see a little bit more than what the images show (you can click on the photos to view the listings).

Located in the heart of Kitsilano, this home has 3 bedrooms and 2.5 bathrooms.  It is the “garden level” suite in this heritage conversion…I’d want to see it just to know what a $700K basement apartment looks like up close. Read more…

Pink Shirt Day 2013: advocacy, Oscars and book clubs.

I’ve had an interesting few days of observing, reading about and advocating to put an end to bullying.

Advocacy

Last Friday, I attended the 2nd Annual Pink Shirt Ladies Luncheon at Society restaurant.  The event was co-hosted by the equally lovely Fiona Forbes and Karen Kuhnkuhn.  Aside from the amazing ladies, delicious food and incredible silent auction, what struck me most was Forbes’ brave and vulnerable recollection of a time last year when she, herself, was bullied on social media.  She spoke of how, as an adult, she thought that it was something she could just deal with on her own, but when it got to be too much, she did reach out to friends.  The point was, if as a grown-up being bullied is traumatic and isolating, imagine what it is like for children.

Bravo, Fiona, for sharing your story!

The second most expensive mansion to ever be listed in Canada is situated in, you guessed it, Vancouver.  Well, West Vancouver to be precise.

At $37.9 million, the home is being called a complete “tear down” with value only being in the land.

I can’t imagine why…it’s just so gorgeous!!

Absurd Vancouver Property (February 7th, 2013)

Well (*claps hands and rubs them together*), things should be getting fired back up again after the Christmas slump in Vancouver Real Estate.

Prices are taking a bit of a dip, however.  Wonder what $1.3 million will get you these days.

In LaLa Land, you can scoop up the former home of American Idol contestant, David Cook:

Vancouver named the most expensive city in North America

According to the latest Worldwide Cost of Living Survey from the Economist Intelligence Unit, Vancouver is the most expensive city to inhabit in North America ahead of Los Angeles, San Francisco and New York.  I wasn’t surprised to see Vancouver on this list, but didn’t expect it to come up ahead of these major U.S. cities.

According to the survey, there are 20 cities worldwide that are more expensive to live in than Vancouver.  I thought it would be interesting to know what a million dollars would buy you in the top five most expensive cities…as we know in YVR it gets us a crack shack on a tiny pile of dirt.

5. Melbourne, Australia

Just over a million dollars will get you this charming half-duplex in sunny Melbourne:
