Absurd Vancouver Properties of 2012 wrap up on Global BC Morning News
This morning, I had the pleasure of sitting down with Sophie Lui and Steve Darling of Global BC’s Morning News, to discuss some of my Top Absurd Vancouver Properties of 2012. I was really excited to do my first live TV spot! I was so worried that I would over-sleep, so I was up at 5:30 AM to spackle my face and tame the tresses. The piece was short and I felt like it moved along at a good pace. Watching back, I think it was a great overview, but I wish we had time to do some comparables like I have in the Absurd Vancouver Property posts…the ridiculousness of Vancouver pricing really hits home when you see what your dollar gets you elsewhere! In case you missed the segment, I’ve attached it below:

oh you did just lovely!! Loved your segment!
Thanks, doll!
Looking great Melissa, I hope you have another chance to do the comparables. Would this be a weekly segment?
Perhaps, if enough people let the station know they liked it!
Great job. Very clear and concise. It would have been icing on the cake if you had thrown in some of that witty humour of yours to explain why it’s ‘absurd’. I hope you’ll be a regular on the show and perhaps the evening edition too. I hear too much of the “it’s a great time to buy now” pundits and your reality check is refreshing.

Love the blog. Its a hilarious city we live in. Though you cant argue with supply and demand.
These castles on the other hand, similarly priced to a 800sq ft glass box over in Yaletown or Coal Harbour.
Fantastic! I think I may just use one of those castles in a future post.
woohoo! such a natural. I think you’ll be a regular – would love to see the house comparisons is other cities – just like you mentioned. Proud of you lady! a x
dumdum guy Steve Darling kinda messed it up for everyone didn’t he?! the message wasn’t as clear as it could have been thanks his “beautiful” remarks and “the whole house?!” bit when you showed him the shack on the hill. aw well, remember, we are in the wacky west.
You did a great job!
I can’t believe that Sophie Lui thought that #1 house “looked good on the outside”, even for $300,000 that house wouldn’t look good on the outside, never mind 3.2 million.
and no offense to you, but the absolute absurdity of the Vancouver housing market is summed up in you stating that “you wished” you owned that house near Main street that was listed for $900,000
It is a shame they didn’t allow or have time for comparables, and I’m sure that your hosts had to be a little subdued with their responses, but all in all it was a good piece, congrats!
Thanks so much!!
Too bad you couldn’t see my face when I said “I wish” when I showed the Main street property. It was a dry comment complete with an eye roll. I would never pay $900K for a post-stamp lot with a complete bulldozer of a house!
my friends that had a hard time believing me last year that they should hold off on buying are now actually thanking me (not that I’m an expert, it should have been blatantly obvious to all(
Now that the MSM is jumping on the Vancouver drops it seems to have finally occurred to my friends that Real Estate doesn’t always go up, and maybe half a million for a 600 square foot “special assessment waiting to happen” apartment might be a bit too expensive.
Here’s to some much cheaper Vancouver homes in the next couple of years….fingers crossed:)
Just to point out the first house profiled on Cambie street for what seems like an absurdly high 3.2Million – the city has rezoned most of cambie street to build high-rises. That property was priced for a developer to come and build 12 stories up, so its not very useful as a residential property value. Before they were all rezoned, houses like that were going for just over a million.

Thanks…I didn’t have time to address that, however it was in my notes that the price point was likely due to the re-zoning. Guess even a developer wasn’t interested, though, as this listing did not sell. And I beg to differ…houses in the Cambie and Douglas Park area were being listed and selling for closer to 2 million during last year’s high point.
Well done for getting yourself and this piece on the mainstream TV.
Re: the 499k house. I would have liked you to mention that the renter is probably paying ($1500) about half the cost of buying that dump once mortgage, taxes, and maintenance are included.
Cutting to pictures of US comparable properties in other “they’re not building more land” type cities such as San Francisco would have been nice too.
Keep up the good fight!
You did great and you were very kind with your remarks. But, I did have to chuckle because I believe the newscasters have NO concept about housing values and prices.
