The REAL Real Housewives of Vancouver: Stephanie Von Dehn Schick (a.k.a. The Reluctant Chef)

Stephanie was born and raised in Vancouver and currently lives with her family in the Mount Pleasant neighborhood. She is a former medical social worker who is now a stay at home mom with two daughters (5 and 3). Her duties include being a medic and short order cook (aka the “Reluctant Chef“) for her allergic family members, acting as a mediator between her spirited daughters and, most importantly, ensuring a constant supply of snacks. Prior to having kids, she was an avid horseback rider and ultimate Frisbee player. Her exercise of choice these days involves talking about going to the gym and includes thoughts about calling the personal trainer that works there. Lugging strollers, lunch bags and carrying children is her current version of cross training. Her personal style is “Joe Fresh meets MEC” and she is said to have contributed to Vancouver’s designation as the “worst dressed city”. Stephanie’s idea of fine dining is eating anything that is not her own cooking (or anything containing chocolate). Stephanie is often spotted at the local community centers, rushing late to classes, with her daughters in tow. After eight pm, she can be found crocheting and knitting, especially around birthdays and Christmas.

What characteristics define the Vancouver Housewife?

The Vancouver Housewife is someone who is able to tolerate incessant rain (while entertaining her kids) and who participates in endless discussions about the weather and the crazy Vancouver real estate market. She must also be able to get her kids into the desired preschool, swim lessons, ballet and gymnastics classes that fill up within minutes of registration opening.

Are you a good representation of a Vancouver Housewife? Why?

If being a good representation of a Vancouver Housewife involves being a  surgically enhanced fashionista, then No…. I am not a good example…..I proudly represent the other subset of Vancouver Housewives who prefer to wear jeans and T-shirts and who model the “just got out of bed and haven’t had time for a shower or makeup” look.

Do you feel that living in Vancouver in some way defines who you are? Please explain.

Having been born and raised here I feel a definite connection to this city.  The city defines me as a homebody who enjoys being surrounded by family and longtime friends. My roots run deep and it is hard to imagine living anywhere else (ok..maybe somewhere that is warm and sunny more than 2 months of the year would be nice).

Have you ever had cosmetic surgery, Botox, Restalyne injections, etc.? If so, please provide details. If you haven’t had any of the above procedures performed, would you consider it?

No….unless corn removal at the podiatrist counts… I wouldn’t consider having any of the above procedures (unless of course it was required by a television show and then I would totally be willing to try all of them….especially if some liposuction was thrown in….and maybe some implants and tummy tuck as well….and maybe some surgery to look like a cat…..)

Other than your children (if applicable), what is the accomplishment of which you are most proud?

I am most proud of the fact that, on some days, I have a shower.

Has the desire for affluence/power/money been a motivator in the choices you’ve made for your life?

Can’t you tell?

Tell us about your stuff. What do you like to buy, collect, etc.?

I like to collect receipts, wrappers, cereal crumbs, partially completed “to do” lists, sippy cups, hair elastics and unpaired socks. I also own many original paintings and a special collection of abstract clay creations (courtesy of my daughters). My shopping “habit” includes buying copious amounts of groceries and the occasional home and garden item.

Do you have “staff” in your home? (E.g. nanny, driver, chef, etc.) I am the staff! (my bosses are my 3 and 5 year old daughters).

Once a week my lovely sitter (aka my mid week “sanity saver”) takes over for me so I can go grocery shopping and attend medical appointments. I’m seriously considering getting help once a month with the cooking/baking  (since our family can never go out for dinner or order in because of severe allergies). Most days I feel chained to the kitchen…..

Do you belong to any clubs, teams, groups or social organizations?

I belong to several prestigious clubs around town, including the Vancouver Aquarium, Van Duesen Gardens and Science World. These memberships give me VIP entrance and perks such as 10% off at the gift shops.

On a serious note, however, I am a member of the Metro Vancouver Anaphylaxis Group.

Finish this sentence: “My life’s motto is ….”

“A clean house is a sign of a wasted life….”  When the house is a disaster, I try and make myself feel better by remembering this statement…..
