this question reminds me of how I look at my moms photos, things I remember about her are so distant till I see a picture then thousands of memories and things she said flood back to me, that is why a picture is worth a thousand words. It can trigger so many amazing thoughts, even smells.
a picture can capture a moment in time, priceless in years to come!
A picture can capture a moment in its entirety – all the detail but also all the emotion: joy, sadness, contemplation, peacefulness. Nothing else can measure up.
My kids have always complained that I take too many pictures of them! But I’m so glad I”m shutter happy. Memories fade in time (can you remember exactly what you looked like 20 years ago without a photo?) and having pictures is the only way to forever capture a moment…
instead of journaling i often document what our family did during the day through photos. call me lazy but i find it so much simpler to look at an image of our day instead of writing every single detail down in a book. i like being able to share that photo with friends and family and have it serve as a visual reminder of the day. in my case a picture is actually worth a 1000 words and that’s the way i like it.
A picture means something different every time you look at it. Words can’t quite do that, I think.
I think light is such a hard thing to convey in words, but can make a photograph so beautiful.
Pictures do not need translation, people from completely different cultures and speaking different languages can immediately understand and be triggered by the same picture.
A picture is worth a thousand words because it will never get “lost in translation”, it conveys the “the truth” if you dare to look deep enough.
1 single picture can bring back a flood of amazing memories, sounds, smells and feelings.
I love photography because of it’s ability to capture an instant and hold it in the palm of your hand again and again. A photo of a person – especially a young child – truly captures them as they are just then – a scraped knee, curious looks, funny smiles… As a mom I see this in my own two boys, no longer babies, as they grow and challenge the world – they are walking with new swaggers and brash attitudes that will be worn smooth with time, all documented in our family photos.
A photo can capture moments that one may not see when they are “in the moment”…My photos of those I have loved that have passed away allow me to relive my love for them and a relive beautiful memories. I have a sweet dog that is getting older, and she is my only real close family left. I would love to have a session of her and I together to remember her loyalty and love in the years to come
I am a mother of 2 young children and against some peoples advice I did not start a book of “cute things my children say” thinking that I would remember EVERYTHING. Well 4 years on I remember NOTHING. However, when I look at a picture of them as babies I remember every single emotion. So please let me be the winner of a photo session so that when I an old and have dementia I can kook back on the photos and remember how sweet my childrens laughter was and how many times that day I had to say “smile god damn it”.
There is nothing like a photograph to evoke emotion, pride, happiness, and memories you thought you had forgotten.
Pictures are like time capsules – so reflective of a particular moment in time. They can show politics of an age, trends of an era or emotion of a moment. I do think that a single, well-captured photo takes dozens of words to describe but can exist as a solitary form of communication.
Especially with little ones, moments pass so very quickly! Thank goodness for photos!
Although we can’t stop the passage of time, a photograph has the ability to freeze a split second of our lives, capturing a moment, whether important or trivial at that time. Photographs provide us with the opportunity to view the moments of our lives. They allow us to relive moments such as graduations, weddings, family reunions, and the birth of a child. Photographs become even more precious when they contain the images of people we have lost.
Especially for little ones, a picture can capture the details you take for granted until they are no longer there. (Today, for example, a friend pointed out that my son’s chubby little hands have dimples on each knuckle!)
Pictures trigger memories of those special and not so special times in our lives…. That shot when I was 6 (over 50 years ago)when I did not want to have my picture taken cause my Mom had made me dress up, in black patent leather shoes that hurt my feet, and curled my hair so tight…it looked a fright (her words) and I thought I looked awful…now I look at the picture and I see an angry but kinda cute little girl….The emotions from that day as as crisp and clear as the image (the anger the humiliation),,,and nothing could give me that but a photograph,,,,she is gone now but I often wonder what my Mother thought when she looked at that shot….I am sure her memories were very different than mine…it would have been an interesting conversation had we ever had it…..
Because it can capture the magic of innocence the passion between two people or even the simplicity of the little things.
A picture is worth a thousand words because every picture can be portrayed by someone differently and their perceptions change the story behind the photo. True beauty is in photography! And always great stories!
Because a thousand people can look at the same image and all take something different away from it.
