Lake Life

This summer, for the first time since we were kids, our family is up in the Okanagan. We’ve rented a townhouse in Osoyoos and are enjoying a week in the sun, by the lake.

I love getting away from the city on trips with our kids. However, at the ages they are right now, my husband and I have decided that big expensive resort-style vacations are not really practical, never mind affordable (for us, on our own…sure, maybe someday soon). But, why spend all that time traveling and money paying for a vacation that little kids won’t really appreciate or remember? So, we’ve focused more on smaller getaways to close by destinations…

We are fortunate enough to live somewhere where there are an endless variety of places to go and see – all a short drive from the city. We’ve taken little jaunts to the Sunshine Coast, Whistler, Vancouver Island and south of the boarder as well. About 5 days seems to be a good length of time for our kids…and, when you stay fairly local, there are no time changes (and subsequent disruptions to sleep patterns) to contend with.

Doing the full family (i.e. grandparents, aunts, uncles etc.) vacation is an experience I feel so fortunate to have. What I love about traveling en masse, with the rest of my clan (aside from the built in babysitters!) is the quality time we get to spend together (even just going for a simple walk or bike ride). Today, as a big treat, we rented a boat for a few hours. My daughter (a total water baby) was in heaven!!

Tomorrow, Nana and Grandad have agreed to take the kids to the water slides so Dave and I can hit up some of the local wineries. Pity I don’t much like the stuff…LOL (I have yet to meet a mom who doesn’t like wine).

What have been your best family vacation experiences?

staying at a beautiful lodge in Sun Valley Idaho was one of my favourite holidays! So beautiful there in the summer and winter, and you can drive there from Vancouver in about 14 hour..

Hope you have a nice holiday!

Disneyland! Sorry, I know that’s not really what you were looking for but that honestly has been my favorite trip with my daughter so far. She was 4 at the time and it was just magical. But part of it was also that we were in the same time zone and compared to where we usually have to go to visit grandparents, it really wasn’t very far. Osoyoos looks beautiful by the way.
